Compton, 1988 The father of five daughters, Richard Williams, has long made a detailed plan for the future of his girls and is stubbornly following it, and from eight-year-old Venus and seven-year-old Serena, he intends to make tennis stars. Although Richard and his wife, Brandi, know little about preparing professional tennis players, they themselves trained their daughters and taught them the technique as best they could. World-famous coach Paul Cohen, who works with Pete Sampras and John McEnroe, agrees to free lessons, but only for Venus. Then Richard records the classes on camera, and Brandi begins to train Serena based on them.

Good movie, but not great. I won’t describe what it is about. Read the logline, because what follows is local.
Iâll start right away with the fact that they didnât screw it up. The main character – Richard – is controversial. At first, he says that he is raising his daughters so that they do not become like him – poor. It is the presence of money, in his opinion, is the source of happiness. Then he says that he does not want his girls to go into crime. Then he teaches them modesty, but he himself behaves defiantly. Then he comes back to the importance of money. And then he begins to restrain the girls’ talent, referring to a mysterious plan. In general, the hero is very stormy. And here you can reproach me that one comes out of the other. This is so, but only when they do not constantly declare the above plan, supposedly painted in detail by the main character. What’s the plan? I kept waiting for the whole background to be revealed to me at the end, but this did not happen. If this had not been constantly reminded, then I would not have paid attention to it. And so, this is a real gun on the wall, which did not fire during the entire film.
The mention of illegitimate children of the protagonist was also embarrassing. There was not a word about them for the whole film, and then suddenly they started talking about them, in order to forget again in a minute. What is this for? Did you find another scenario? Itâs just that the hero has five children, and here they also mention one or two (I donât remember already). I don’t care that this movie is based on real events. First of all, this is a feature film. If you declare something or someone, then this should work. Another muddy moment is connected with the bandits, who at first have a negative attitude towards Richard, and then, for some unknown reason, positively. It felt like something was cut out of a movie. And why a king? The main character was called “King Richard” only once by a certain man. The reason for such a title or nickname is not clear what it is.
The chicanery is over. Yes, I know that I dug into the details, but there is no limit to perfection. Plus, these moments really embarrassed me.
Will Smith! He is beautiful as always, and even with a belly. I think it’s the best in terms of shedding a tear. Do you agree? Remember all his touching scenes in films. He always plays noble men. Add tears to such characters. A facial expression that holds back strong emotions, but without grimace. Then the effect of glass eyes. And then it! Flowing male tears …. And all without sound. Vooot. He always does it great. There is such a scene in this movie. After moments like this, I don’t know what has to happen for me not to like the film.
I’m not interested in tennis. I don’t know these people, but it doesn’t matter. The important thing is that there are many good, instructive and powerful scenes in the picture.
