The mighty sorceress Queen Gedren steals an ancient magical talisman capable of destroying the entire world. After the magnificent ‘Conan the Barbarian’ and the not so successful ‘Conan the Destroyer’ they decided to make a spin-off about the beautiful Amazon warrior, Red Sonja, created by the same Robert Howard. What came out, threw the genre of heroic fantasy cinema five years ago.

Brigitte Nielsen starred in the title role, and though she looks exactly how most people imagine Red Sonja to look, her level of acting and stage fencing is on the level of ‘Barbarian Queen,’ but no way for a movie that claims to be ‘Conan 3.

Schwarzenegger does a better job, although his character Kalidor turns out to be an exact copy of Conan, although Kalidor, according to the legend, is a nobleman, not some northern barbarian.

Two more of Sonja’s companions – the spoiled little prince Tarn, who gets more and more spanked, and the prince’s bodyguard, the cheerful fat Falcon, armed with something like a naked bone. We have to assume that they appear in the movie to make the audience smile, but unlike the sorcerer Akira and the thief Malak from the Conan films, it was not funny.

The main female villain, Queen Gedren, is played by Sandal Bergman, who once played the role of warrior Valerie in Conan the Barbarian. Remembering with what a deadly grace she once wielded a blade, cutting a path Conan, it is impossible not to regret that Sandal did not want to play Red Sonja.

I don’t want to talk about the fight scenes. You can forgive a lot for a fantasy movie, but the actors’ inability to fence – no way.

Only one monster appears in the entire movie, a cheesy metal fish that would have been better off not being there at all. The mere sight of this ‘horrible assassin’ elicits nervous laughter.

What is definitely good about this movie is the Ennio Morricone soundtrack. And that, I’m afraid, is all there is to say about this film.
