4k movies reviews
1987. A true explosion of quality sci-fi in world cinema. Such iconic and legendary characters as Terminator, Predator and Aliens had already been created, which served as the foundation for the further development of sci-fi cinema and a model for thousands of follow-up films.

“Paul Verhoeven’s The Police Robot, of course, is not as profound as the aforementioned pictures, but, without a doubt, it can be counted among this cohort of great films, because to this day this picture is a masterpiece of the genre and an ageless classic.

It is violent, fast-paced, driving, mocking and satirical of a futuristic society and replete with excessive violence (a trait inherent in all of Verhoeven’s works). Paul very subtly and competently, albeit with a fair amount of irony and cynicism, showed an apocalyptic and dystopian model of society, nurtured on hypertrophied violence, in which notions like conscience, humanity, compassion, love and friendship have long since been devalued and lost all meaning.

Everything is ruled by money and power, and the corrupt giant corporations with them (the OSR corporation is somewhat associated with Wayland/Yutani in “Aliens”), controlling everything and everything, including the police and simultaneously cooperating with criminal structures, as a result of which Detroit of the future is suffocated by crime and violence, becoming a hotbed of prostitution and drug addiction, and the streets of the city are full of scum, rapists and murderers.

At this moment, on the streets of the city and appears a police robot, the embodiment of the ideal guardian of order and guardian of the law, shining metal, under the armor which hides the good heart of man. Of course, no one sees anything human in him, except, perhaps, Lewis: not the townspeople, not the police, not the DCS officials, for whom he is just a pawn who does not figure in their grand schemes, nor the criminals, for whom he is just a target. But when the situation gets out of control, the robot cop remembers his killers, brings to light an “evil” corporate official, avenges Alex Murphy and brings order to the city with his iron hand.

An original plot, brilliant direction, good actors (besides Weller, we can single out Ronnie Cox and Cartwood Smith – wonderfully acted), excellent action with superb action scenes and superb technical realization: cameraman, sound, editing, visual effects. We should separately emphasize a very strong soundtrack by Basil Poledouris – an indisputable advantage of the film. A cult sci-fi action film. One of Verhoeven’s best works.
