4k movies reviews
In 1919, the U.S. government made one of the biggest mistakes in its history – it passed a proclamation banning the export and sale of liquor in the country. Prohibition turned the quiet and measured life of Americans upside down, caused the emergence of underground organizations and entire enterprises for the purchase and distribution of alcohol, spawned street wars and destroyed hundreds of lives. European, Italian-American and Jewish immigrants, who built their criminal clans on illegal importation of goods into the country, were particularly successful in this endeavor. So began Al Capone – the most famous gangster of all time …

Chicago, the early 30s of the twentieth century. Criminal life has reached its climax – the victim of street gangs is a little girl who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. No longer had the strength to tolerate this outrage. A special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Eliot Ness, is going to put an end to organized crime in the country by challenging Al Capone himself.

Eliot is the image of an honest and law-abiding citizen. Whatever the law is, it must be respected, and Eliot is ready to punish anyone who breaks it. He is a true fighter for the idea and intends, at all costs, to bring the work he has begun to the end. In the process, Eliot will face insurmountable difficulties, constant threats, deliberately wrong tips and betrayal by subordinates. But, quite by chance, fate has brought Eliot together with Detective Mallows – as much of a fighter for the idea as he is, but much more experienced. Inviting to his team Giuseppe Petri – still a police trainee, but already able to hit the target with a gun even with his eyes closed, and Oscar Wallace – a weasel accountant, whose information later led to the arrest of Capone, they created their organization to combat organized crime, which newspapers quickly dubbed ‘Untouchables’.

The methods of fighting ‘Untouchables’ literally immediately bore fruit. Capone was losing merchandise, losing money, and, most importantly, was beginning to lose his influence. As a result, a real war broke out, the outcome of which everyone knows – Capone did go to jail, but the charges related only to failure to pay taxes …

I dare to suppose that this film is probably the best one in De Palma’s filmography. The atmosphere is so beautifully conveyed that you’re completely immersed in the Prohibition era.
in the era of Prohibition and feel yourself a part of the picture. The acting skills of the actors on the movie set are so high that one can feel real professionalism and dedication in each of their actions.

Sean Connery, as you know, very stubbornly refused to participate in the film, but, nevertheless, when he agreed to play Mallone, he performed it with the most gorgeous brilliance and great skill. His work won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and was appreciated by world audiences.

Robert De Niro also showed his best side. This is exactly how I imagined Al Capone to be – a cold-blooded killer, a ruthless monster who is always in the public eye, as well as reveling in wealth and luxury. The confrontation of his character with the team ‘Untouchables’ causes a whole palette of feelings of antipathy to Al Capone, but not to De Niro himself, because so skillfully perform any image under the power of not every actor.

It is wonderful to watch the young Andy Garcia – his best roles are yet to come, but in this movie, he showed himself just excellently, because it is impossible to imagine anyone else as Giuseppe Petri.

Kevin Costner is a little bit lost against the background of other stars in spite of the fact that his character is the main one in the course of the movie, but I think, it is excusable, because the movie is centred around the confrontation between Mallone and Capone, that is why Eliot Ness goes to the background at times.

All in all, the film is very strong, and it can compete with Leone, Hawkes, Scorsese and Copolla for the title of one of the best gangster works in cinema.
