4k movies reviews
I managed to watch the film at a special pre-premiere screening. The expansion of the Swedes into Hollywood continues: recently, Thomas Alfredson directed The Spy; this time – we see the product of the director’s tandem of Mans Marlind and Björn Stein. And whoever says what, nevertheless, ‘Another World’, invented by Len Wiseman, is far from the worst vampire franchise, especially against the background of those that we have today. The first film, released nine years ago, was quite original, set the tone for the specific surroundings of the series and showed the world the formidable warrior Selena performed by Kate Beckinsale. Strange, but in the third part there was no place for her character. And now Selena returns, this time Kate even became voluminous, the film was filmed in 3D (according to the creators, it was filmed, not converted), and in this case the format received a very worthy implementation, which cannot but rejoice.

The Universe of the ‘Other World’ in ‘Awakening’ underwent a number of significant changes, in particular, in the confrontation between vampires and lycans, a third party appeared – humanity, and the battlefield was transferred to the cold stone jungle of the city, which removes the accents of the picture from the dark fantasy, which were the first films, towards a fantastic action movie against the backdrop of cold industrial scenery. People learned about the existence of two warring races, and rallied to destroy them. At the beginning of the film, we learn that both enemies of humanity are on the brink of extinction, and those who are still alive have gone underground. Even if you have not seen a single previous film in the series, all events will be immediately clear; the plot from the first minutes gives a simple schematic description of everything that happens, and calls to turn off the brain and enjoy the visual splendor of the new three-dimensional ‘Other World’. Of course, you should not expect great revelations from the film and take everything too seriously – the cinema is purely entertaining, and if you immediately catch this attitude, you can get quite a few positive emotions. Nevertheless, the plot is well thought out, even if the dialogues do not shine with originality, and some of the twists are quite formulaic, there is a very cool twist in the middle of the picture, so the film is attractive not only due to its visual component.

Selena tears up and rushes on the screen, it seems as if Kate, wearing a latex suit, wants to recoup everything that her character had to go through in ‘Contraband’, methodically throwing enemies in different directions. The striking physical strength of our pale blue-eyed heroine looks both amusing and impressive; it doesn’t cost her anything to jump over a three-meter fence, turn the van over with a blow of the shoulder, or, in the fight against a lycan, plunge into an elevator shaft without breaking anything. And of course, the bullets can’t do her any harm when she, like Arnie in ‘Terminator 2’, under their whistle, defiles to the main entrance of the ‘Antigen’. Nevertheless, the cold-blooded killing machine is waiting for the test of emotionality – Selena will be destined to meet her already old enough daughter, which hints at a dramatic line that is likely to be ignored by the viewer, absorbed in the hurricane battle scenes of the film. There is a lot of action, and it certainly will not make you bored. Selena’s daughter played India Aili, and at first the analogy with Chloe Moretz from ‘Let Me In’ suggested itself; here it is worth noting her spectacular make-up and terrible metamorphoses. In general, the R rating provides a sufficient amount of meat and gore, which is good news. And Lycans turned out to be scary, and drawn very well. And there is also a gorgeous scene when Selena does David the most direct ‘heart massage’ that can be eaten – it was really cool.

The film, sharply plunging the viewer into its story at the beginning, also sharply marks its ending, which remains open, and leaves a lot of room for further development. One and a half hours fly by quickly, practically giving the heroes no time for respite. Underworld: Awakening does not claim to be more than a spectacular action fantasy, nor does it try to enrich the plot with excessive morality and excessive drama to the detriment of dynamics. Nevertheless, this is good entertainment, worth spending an evening on, and if you are also the proud owner of an IMAX hall in your city, this is a great reason to visit it.
