CODA is the main triumph of the Sundance Film Festival 2021, winning the Grand Prix for Best Drama, Best Director, Audience Award and Special Jury Prize for Best Actor. Another indication of the film’s success is the fact that Apple bought the rights to its screening for a record $25 million for a film festival. Many critics have called CODA the most moving film of 2021. Seemingly the simplest story, but it really touches you to the core, evoking the strongest emotions.
The film is a remake of the 2014 French film ‘The Laundry Family’ and tells the story of schoolgirl Ruby, who lives with deaf parents. She is the only one in her family who can hear and dreams of finding herself in the music industry. But her parents’ business is starting to have financial problems, and Ruby has to help her family and build her own life in parallel, constantly at a crossroads between her family and her dream.
This is the second feature film by Sian Heder, director of the TV series “Orange is the Hit of the Season” and “Shine.” The title role is played by the talented actress Emilia Jones, who has such projects as ‘Locke and Key,’ ‘Underworld’ and ‘Ghostland’ under her belt.
Speaking about the plot, the world cinema, of course, had many similar stories about love, family and dreams, but in this case thanks to the efforts of the director a heavy family drama is perceived as a classic teen romcom, as if straight from the 90’s, when linear plots were filled with a special soulfulness that remained in memory for many years. This movie is not at all perceived as anything original or innovative in terms of visual technical progress. There is no imposition of tolerance, artificially created interracial relations and many other topical aspects of modern cinema. Everything here is banal and simple, yet incredibly moving, exciting and enjoyable. The film has both humorous moments and dramatic ones that will be accompanied by tears on your cheeks. And it will be almost impossible to hold them back, because everything that happens on the screen looks absolutely real. Believe every word, every character and every action. The running time of the movie is almost two hours, but they fly by in an instant, and during the end credits you already want to go back to the beginning to relive the story, but with your favorite characters, for this is a truly amazing adventure of ordinary people in the simple world called Life.
