North of Canada. Unreliable April ice, truck weight – 33 tons. Driving on the frozen surface of the lake is possible only at a certain speed, and stopping or accelerating means certain death. But this is precisely the task facing the convoy of trucks – only they can save people trapped in a collapsed diamond mine. However, neither ice cracking under the wheels nor a blizzard can compare with the challenges that await drivers ahead.

‘The Ice Road’ is not a blockbuster, of course, and the film’s budget is clearly not large – judging by the schedule and filming.
The main characters are simple truckers, who are tasked with bringing equipment to the mine to rescue workers who were trapped in an accident. However, as is usually the case, it turns out that the bigwigs from the business are not interested in this – and a trip on wagons on winter roads and on ice turns into a series of deadly obstacles …
I liked the film, although I cannot call it original, and the plot – new. I can’t say that old Liam Neeson showed the wonders of acting here, and the effects, graphics and work of the writers are divine. However, nevertheless – and this is a paradox – I watched this movie with pleasure.
Who knows what a winter road is? So: I did not know that winter roads also exist in the northern states and in Canada. And they, it turns out, are there. And the difficulties of driving trucks in winter conditions in the ‘Ice Drive’ are also shown. The authors paid attention to wrenches, cables, details, and in general the work of truckers – and this, I think, is already good.
I noticed that in Russia they almost stopped making films on ‘production’ topics – that is, the working people in the ‘big’ Russian cinema somehow left by themselves and the shadows, and in their place came heroes who really do not work, and with all their they create utopian and unreal images of idlers. But the Americans do not forget about their labor people – and regularly make them heroes of the next thrillers or action films – albeit with a low budget.
‘The Ice Road’ just reminds us of simple hard workers, although they made a budget thriller out of the film.
If you love special effects and expect a wow-effect from the cinema, then you will most likely not like ‘The Ice Road’. In some places it is made rather clumsy. But at the same time, the film is very similar to American action films of the second half of the 1980s and the first half of the 1990s, and when viewed it evokes an aching feeling of nostalgia for the era of video salons. And, for me, this is its undoubted merit.
