The small campus is shrouded in a bloody veil of terrible crimes, the victims of which are participants in a mysterious game of quick wits. The investigation of this case reveals similar examples in the past and revolves around the personality of the former detective Vincent Swan (Dennis Hopper), who at one time was looking for the killer at whose hands his daughter died. The experienced, but not forgotten nightmare again overtakes him, but his professional instinct and personal motives make him look again at a number of issues through the eyes of the past and become more cold-blooded in his actions. True, now everything depends not only on him.
Director David Worth, even in the famous sports films, demonstrated a spectacular combination of action and the psychological component of his stories. His experience turned out to be indispensable for detective stories, of which the United States is most invented in the world and in a variety of categories, including low-budget films. Despite this, Worth largely managed to find the line between thriller, melodrama and puzzle, and at the same time give the central characters an opportunity to sufficiently reveal themselves to the audience.
Dennis Hopper, who initially won in his role, pleasantly surprised not so much with the usual manner of playing, but rather with the compact and organic placement of his hero in the plane of the picture, successfully complemented by lesser-known persons. Through the efforts of the scriptwriters, first of all, the film does not lose the initially high note of the narrative and even in the most climaxing places it retains the uniformity of the action, which is a big plus for the general perception of the âmysteriousâ film.
The “Prophet of Death”, of course, is not devoid of a characteristic American component in some scenes, such as, for example, a caricature of everyday plans or the presence of such typical relaxation methods as a shoulder massage. Although these tricks in the image of trifles are almost invisible, their presence somewhat weakens the taut thread of the plot and reminds us that we are dealing with just an American film, albeit of a very good quality.
